Just having fun painting tonight, going for more of a Bill Wray/Miles Thompson-ish technique. |

This morning I decided to take one of the faces I had drawn on Thursday and turn it into a painting just for fun. It was a cool exercise, and I had to make up all of the lighting information since there was none in the drawing. Here's a little GIF animation that shows my process from original sketch to cleaned up drawing to painting and finally color.

I put this process animation as well as another for the "Rose" illustration up in the Extras section under Tutorials. |

One of my biggest sources of inspiration lately is the Fantasy/Sci-fi section at Half Price Books. I find the covers of vintage 60's & 70's paperback fantasy books to be extremely appealing for a couple of reasons:
1. The Ladies - Of course?
2. The Colors - I love the color schemes, lots of yellows, oranges, reds and greens.
3. Fantasy Fog - That's my word for all the cool smoke and fog that the old illustrators put into their pictures, it gives them such an awesome feel.
4. Star Wars - My deeply rooted love for Star Wars at an early age affects a lot of the way I think, and those movies were chock full of scenes that could have been ripped straight off of any of the sci-fi paperbacks at the time.
This is the cover that inspired my illustration:

The artist is Gino D'Achille. |

Man I am super insecure about posting these as I almost never post things that could legitimately be called "sketches", and I don't think these are any good, but maybe it will help me get better if I share? Well, I went out to the mall this afternoon to practice drawing people from life and also to practice some of the things that Katie Rice and John K talk about on their blogs a lot - mainly unique shapes and expressions. I found myself re-using certain shapes and lines a lot, so I tried to force myself to make more complicated and interesting shapes that are still "simple" in a graphic design sort of way? It didn't totally work as I still wound up relying on a couple of the same symbols for "eyes" and "nose" and such. And I also tried to do a minimal amount of gussy-ing up to these images, but I just couldn't help doing some! Well I'll keep working at it, hopefully I will be marginally good at this one day!

Just something spontaneous I decided to draw this morning. All I knew was I wanted to draw a girl and I wanted to get a slightly looser/messy painting type feel to it. Oh and thanks to Jared at Drawn.ca for the awesome plug yesterday!

Here's my emerald city write-up at last! I still can't believe how much fun it was, I can't wait to do more of these things. And thanks to Chris for taking all of the pictures. I really don't know why I'm so awful at photography. Click the picture below for the photo journal -

Here's a new picture to get things going. I drew it over the weekend, and I had quite a bit of trouble with it even though it's such a simple picture. I did about 4 different drawings of this same girl and ended up taking the body from one and the head from another, because I never did a single drawing where it felt like everything was right.

Hey! Well I decided to take down the old site in favor of a hip new blog-oriented site, since that seems to be the order of the day. Take a look around and let me know what you think. I tried to make it feel and function in much the same way as all of the popular artist blogs on "blogspot", so hopefully it will feel pretty familiar, but also a little different and cool. Just for fun, here are some pictures of the previous designs, for old time's sake -
Version 1.0 - April 2003 to October 2004 - This is the strange, kinda techno-y design I had straight out of college. Hmmm....

Version 2.0 - October 2004 to April 2006 - I liked this design a little better, but it was sort of unflexible and looking at it now it seems boring.
